Web Scavenger Hunt Instructions

DUE: Feb 6 at 2:00 pm

This is an exercise at searching and finding your way around the WWW. It will also help in familiarizing you with how to save and make use of the material you do find and want to use in other documents. Please read this entire page before proceeding!

Find the following on the World Wide Web:

1.What is the weather forecast for Sao Paulo, Brazil for Tueday, Feb 4?

2. You've decided that what you need in your life is a warm and cuddley pooch. A friend has a Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier that you've always found friendly and playful. But where to find a breeder of these puppies?

3. You have a job interview at Infonautics Corp. in Wayne, PA. Instead of calling them up and trying to get someone to give you some dirtections (which will probably be wrong), you use a Web site to create a map with directions from your dorm or apartment or house to Infonautics Corporation, 900 West Valley Road, Wayne, PA 19087-1830.

4. A friend is taking you to an Italian restaurant and you want to show off your Italian. There a site on the Web that will not only tell you how to say "This rigatoni is delicious -- is this sauce homemade?" but it will actually speak it to you. How do you say this in Italian?

5. Valentine's Day is coming up. You want to surprise a special friend in Kansas with some flowers. There are many 800-type services, but find the one on the Web that plays America the Beautiful when you get to their home page and plays Home on the Range when you get to their Kansas affiliate.

6. You're doing some research for a course about education systems in Asia. You saw a brief announcement that on January 30th the Education Minister of Singapore presented a report outlining the three educational priorities for Singapore for the 21st century. You'd sure like to read more about it.

7. You're on your way to Phoenix, AZ and you're on a tight budget. Before you leave you want to find out if there are any local eateries known for a decent hamburger.


Bonus question: (see below before doing)

Find a LIVE photo of the Upper West Side of New York.

THE RULES

1. Your answers are due in my e-mail box (rmarshall@university.edu) by 2:00pm Thursday, Feb 6, 1997. The "Subject" must be "Scavenger Hunt"

2. For each of your five items, provide the following:

• The URL of the page that has the required information
• The URL's of each place you went on your way to that page, including any deadends.
• The search engine and search terms you used (if any) to get you on the path to the answer.

3. BONUS SEARCH: A bonus of 5 points is added for submitting the correct answer to the bonus question ONLY if the entire exercise is submitted by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, Feb 5.

4. This is an individual project. You are welcome to ask classmates to help with procedures or suggestions if you have a problem. But please do not collaborate teams.

6. In some case the desired information may be found at more than one site. Any site that fulfills the requirement is acceptable.

SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS

Make use of the search engines.

Try more than one. Refine your search with additional terms (or sometimes fewer terms) and combinations (for example, in Alta Vista, use NEAR instead of simply AND. Some of the more popular search engines are:
